The classic Krugerrand coin features the former President of South Africa, Paul Kruger, on the obverse side and on the reverse side a jumping antelope in southern Africa. The name of the coin is a combination of Paul Kruger's last name and Rand, a South African town known for large gold discoveries at the end of the 19th century.

Krugerrand coins are traditionally 22 karats due to the copper mixed into them, which is intended to improve the durability of the coins. Despite this, the coin contains one troy ounce of pure gold.

The Krugerrand coin is investment grade gold and is therefore exempt from VAT.
