The Lunar III Rabbit is part of the Perth Mint's well-known Lunar coin series, whose overarching theme refers to the Chinese zodiac. The year 2023 is the year of the hare, and thus the reverse side of the coin features the year's titular animal. In accordance with Chinese astrology, the hare on the gold coin is depicted as a gentle, rapid but also vigilant animal, which despite its quick advance makes sure to watch its back. The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
